Gunplay aka Don Logan was/is a huge Wu head, especially when dealing with the “purple tape” (as if you couldn’t tell from the “aka Don Logan” part) and the debut opus of a one Russell Jones. Damned good to hear that being exhibited in the music; here, directly in beat selection. Much like the “Bitches Ain’t Shit” freestyle, or even Killa Kyleon‘s “Paid In Full,” a heavy, non-Northern drawl (+ actual spittage) over more organic (i.e. drum breaks, loops, and all), upbeat (Golden Era-because-it-was-made-famous-during-the-Golden Era) production proves to never cease in being a worthy, interest-swelling combination of style. Multi-regional/multi-era collage rap.
Expect a full mixtape of these-type freestyles entitled 106 & Snort Freestyle Highdayz Volume 1; to be served up before the Bogota Rich EP entree.
The RZA has been busy with many things lately, of course, but most noticeably (in terms of consistency, output-wise), he’s had his hands in the production of a project with a one Reverend William Burke. Definitely a continuation in the Abbot’s saga of experimental, lo-fi, drug music sauce, while the Rev confidently asserts himself as a well-refined Chi-Town spitter. Here are some of the splashiest (#)Wu Wednesday goodies.
Reverend William Burke “A Moment In Chuuuch” (Feat. The RZA & Beretta 9, Produced by The RZA)
Reverend William Burke “In A Wink Of An Eye” (Produced by The RZA)
Reverend William Burke & The RZA “Untitled Freestyle” (Produced by The RZA)
New Wu Block verses. How do you improve upon a joint produced by The Rza featuring The Lox and Ghost? Let Rae to take ‘em to the cleaners. Enjoy the final version of this…no bombs.
Wu Block “Wu Block” (Feat. Ghostface Killah, Raekwon, & The Lox, Produced by The Rza)
New RZA solo joint, featuring The Revelations (who seem to be their new sonic backing since Wu Tang: Chamber Music). This will appear on the upcoming album from the Wu, Wu Tang: Legendary Weapons (on which Ghost is rumored to be on 8 of the 11 tracks!). In stores June 28th.
Wu-Tang Clan “Only The Rugged Survive” (Produced by Noah Rubin/The Revelations)
The RZA is one of the featured individuals for The Black List Project. In the piece(s), he speaks on the science behind how he got into Hip Hop, the early Wu days and Biz Markie’s interest in the crew, fatherhood, escaping the negatives, chess, and other gems well worth your 5+ minutes.
Forever on my list as one of the best producers, ever…and probably the ONLY cat I would not question for rockin’ the (ill fitting) Canadian tux steez.
