Black Is Everlasting

The young god Haleek Maul is busy on his island finishing up two surely ut ridiculoid projects: the Oxyconteen EP and a Mishka-endorsed mixtape with Chi-Town producers Supreme Cuts. This seems to take right off from the previous leak (a syrup’y number by another Chi-Town duo, The-Drum); as a darker shade of youthful angst submerged in barrel-aged introspection and substance abuse. I don’t know what the fuck they’re putting in the water these days? Son is 15 years old, yet he’s far more engaging than the current lot of rap-blog-buzz fodder who are his senior by only a handful of years, probably because he seems to be pretty “anti-trend.” In Maul’s world, screwed-up vocal effects are something demonic, as opposed to a celebration of “dirty Sprite” and styrofoam cups. 808 kits are bubbling subwoofer psychedelia, as opposed to the beating drum of the trap tribe. Finally, son can fuckin’ rap while maintaining an entertaining and/or thought-provoking element, as opposed to just saying randomly cool, hashtaggy shit over a catchy backdrop.

In other words, his age ain’t the subject to throw focus on; here we have a new rapper who shows mega potential in the zone of living out a long-winded career and making worthy full-length listening experiences…all by being honest to his own unique upbringing.

After you peep this, head over to TheFader for a short interview (4 questions) with Haleek.

THEN, head over to Steady Bloggin’ for a mix (LRAD Chicago) by Supreme Cuts that contains another new joint by the dude.
